KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – April 15th may be called Tax Day, but it’s just the first of three major tax due dates for Michigan property owners and businesses.
Winter property taxes are due today, February 14. It can be a big bill and it can hurt more than federal taxes because they don’t deduct anything from paychecks to cover it.
Mayor Dave Anderson says Kalamazoo County residents can get extra help when they have trouble paying, to avoid foreclosures.
The County Treasurer’s office can set up a payment plan, and for those who qualify, funding assistance is available.
County Treasurer Thomas Whiteman says both the city and the county have allocated $50,000 each to help seniors, and the needy with those payments, to avoid losing their homes. He says right now about 260 local homeowners are facing foreclosure, their goal is to get that as close to zero as they can.
It is one way during this housing crisis to keep people in their homes, and avoid creating more that are homeless.
