PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Schools will not ask voters to renew a building site and sinking fund millage in the May 2024 election.
The school board voted to delay the vote until the August 2024 election.
The PPS Building Site and Sinking Fund has been supported by Portage voters for nearly 60 years and was last renewed on May 20, 2019.
Superintendent Mark Bielang says they realized it would be the only issue on the ballot in May and the school district would have to bear the cost of the entire election, which didn’t make sense.
He says moving it to August will put it to voters with other community issues and not directly cost the district any money.
The millage is levied to support things like school safety, building repairs, busing, and technology.
It is estimated that .5 mil renewal of the will generate around $1.5 million dollars annually for projects through 2029, if approved by voters in August.
