PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Plans for a popular national restaurant at one of the hottest corners in Kalamazoo County was shot down by the Portage City Council because of its impact on the neighborhood.
The developer was seeking rezoning on two residential lots in Glenview Village, just off Westnedge and Milham, to make room for a Raising Cane’s chicken franchise on the corner.
15 residents spoke against the plan, saying all the problems the business would cause would decrease property values, and hurt their quality of life.
Developer Josh Weiner said they will take steps to make sure that doesn’t happen.
The council agreed with the homeowners, saying the neighborhood needs to be protected.
Mayor Patricia Randall said it’s exactly the kind of neighborhood they should be encouraging, not encroaching upon, urging Weiner to alter his site plan, or find another location.
The vote opposing the rezoning was unanimous.
A few Glenview Village plat homeowners had proposed that the Chelsea Street area be studied for Historic District status, to derail the development. That too was denied last night, since the neighbors got what they wanted.
We need another chicken restaurant in the West Main area of Kalamazoo. Competition is good for everyone.
