KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One of the reasons utility bills have risen so fast in Kalamazoo is new state requirements that have been put in place to ensure the systems are safe.
You can blame Flint, or thank them.
This week, city commissioners agreed to pay $6-million for the system upgrades needed to improve corrosion control in the pipes that deliver water to your home. Here is utilities director Jim Baker.
It was the failure to use such chemicals that caused lead to leach out of the pipes in Flint.
Baker says it’s taken some time to get just the right blend of chemicals to work in Kalamazoo’s system.
Baker says the new “Optimized Corrosion Control” system will also help them eliminate some of the complaints they get about discolored water in south side neighborhoods.
Commissioners approved hiring L.D. Docsa & Associates to do the work.
EGLE has given the city 400 days to modify a dozen stations to inject the proper mix of chemicals into the system to seal the pipes.
