KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – It looks like there will be enough support on the Kalamazoo City Commission to move forward on a $5-million face lift for the Arcadia Creek Festival Site, despite critics in the community.
Commissioners got a full briefing on a plan that would make part of the property available for mixed use development, and replace most of the other facilities.
Assistant City Manager Rebekah Kik says the stage, the lighting, the pedestrian bridge and other amenities are all run-down and need repairs, becoming obsolete.
She says they can build it better, so it requires less maintenance and costs less to rent out.
She says with $1.6-million in federal COVID-19 funding and the rest from grants, they can bring it back.
A few residents still would rather see the money spent on the homeless.
Commissioner Don Cooney agrees.
But enough other commissioners appear ready to move forward with the project, to pass it when it comes up at their next meeting.
