KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – There are plans for a major overhaul of Kalamazoo’s Arcadia Park, and it’s already drawing criticism.
The park at Edwards and Kalamazoo Avenue downtown is the site of a number of summer festivals, which have declined in recent years, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.
City finance director Steve Vicenzi says they want to downsize the festival site and repurpose the rest of it.
The two-acre park will be reduced by half, making room for a possible mixed use housing development on the north end of the property.
Vicenzi says it will be financed using federal COVID-19 dollars and grant money.
But advocates for the homeless say it’s a misuse of COVID-19 money to spend it on a park.
The Kalamazoo City Commission will get a full briefing on the initial plans this afternoon.
