COVERT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Holtec International officials say they are expecting to receive a $1.5-billion loan from the federal government to restart the Palisades nuclear power plant.
Spokesman Nick Culp says they are expecting the approval of the loan within the next month and get the plant back online by the end of next year.
Congressman Bill Huizenga is in support of refiring the plant.
The current state budget also has $150-million to help restart Palisades, which would become the first nuclear plant ever restarted in the U.S. after it was shut down in May 2022 to be decommissioned.
Beyond Nuclear activist Kevin Kamps says the plant needs to stay closed and says there are other, better options for power production.
