PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Portage City Council will consider changes in their rules tonight that at least one resident says would make it tougher for citizens to participate in their local government.
One proposal would eliminate one of the two public comment periods during council meetings. Another would eliminate the opportunity for citizens to remove items from the consent agenda for full discussion. The third would move the start time for regular meetings from 7 to 6 p.m.
Dave Ostrem says it would “dim the light of transparency” and is contrary to the promises made by council candidates last fall to insure an open government.
The proposed changes will be up for a vote on this evening’s 7 p.m. agenda.
Both the Kalamazoo city and county commissions allow residents to pull items from the consent agenda.
