KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo city budget is scheduled for final approval tonight. The $288-million spending plan has taken months to compile and hone.
It involves more than just saying okay to the spending. It also involves approving agreements with the Foundation for Excellence, and setting fees for everything from parks activities to greens fees, burial plots and building permits. It also requires approval of several sub-budgets for downtown operations, development agencies and boards as well.
CFO Steve Vicenzi says, bottom line, they will be spending a little less this year than last.
That’s despite adding about 9 new staffers.
City Manager Jim Ritzema says budget preparation has become a year round activity.
The most contentious spending item in this year’s budget was another sizable increase in water and sewer rates, which has already been approved.
Tonight’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
