THREE RIVERS, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is putting out a reminder to people that utility services will not call anyone and threaten to disconnect their power.
They say anyone who gets a fraudulent call like that needs to hang up immediately and then call the customer service number for their power company to verify the information.
Often, scammers will demand payment through a prepaid debit card that can be bought at a store.
People who fear they made a payment to an imposter need to call police as soon as possible to report it.
The four electric providers in St. Joseph County are Consumers Energy, Indiana Michigan Power, Midwest Energy & Communications, and Sturgis Electric. Here are their customer service numbers:
Consumers Energy (800) 477-5050
Indiana Michigan Power (800) 313-6424
Midwest Energy & Communications (800) 492-5989
Sturgis Electric (269) 659-7231 or (269) 659-7232
