KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — How does the idea of school on Saturday sound?
That’s the latest proposal by Kalamazoo Public Schools to help upper elementary students in grades 3-5 who have fallen behind on their basic reading and math skills.
Superintendent Darren Slade says they may get more demand they can meet with just the 400 seats they plan to fill in the next few weeks.
Dr. Slade says he has used this program in other districts to help students catch up with classmates.
He says it will be hard work, but there will also be benefits. Lunch will come from fast food restaurants.
A trip to an amusement park will also come for those who stick with it to the end.
Permission slips will be sent out this coming week to targeted students.
Their goal is to hold their first session on Saturday February 10th.
The classes will either be offered at Edison or Washington, two of the district’s newest elementary schools.
Slade says the Saturday sessions will be structured like a regular school, with classes taught by district instructors, not tutors. There will be one difference. Parents will have to find their own way to get their children to school.
