KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Federal court documents say Carlos Watts Jr. cut his tether and escaped a halfway house in December 2022 because he had killed his girlfriend.
Thirty-five-year-old Heather Kelley was a mother of eight children in Portage and has not been seen since December 10, 2022.
Watts is the suspect in her death but has not been charged with that.
He is awaiting sentencing on his federal escape charge for leaving the halfway house.
Watts says he removed the tether and left due to threats from Heather Kelley’s brother, but authorities don’t believe that.
