KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The next time a disaster occurs in the city of Kalamazoo, local officials will be well prepared to deal with it. It’s a real concern as the climate continues to change.
It is due mainly to the hiring of Brandi Janes to serve as this city’s emergency manager.
The National Weather Service has just awarded the city a “Storm Ready” designation. National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Jeruzal says the 1980 twister that tore through town demonstrates that Kalamazoo is not disaster-proof.
Public Safety Chief Dan Boysen they have also just been recognized by the state as an Emergency Disaster Site which will make help accessible quicker.
Until now, he says they had to work through the county’s emergency preparedness director.
Emergency funding from the state and federal funding, equipment, manpower and even the National Guard could be directly accessible.
