KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s Department of Public Safety chief is frustrated, but says their efforts to reduce the murder rate in Kalamazoo are working, despite this year’s record homicide number.
Chief Dave Boysen says they did see youth gang related murders early this year, but they tailed off as the department started targeting teen offenders for diversion programs.
He says violent crimes are actually down.
Boysen says there has been a rash of one-off killings, the kind that are nearly impossible to predict or prevent.
The chief says he is confident that if they stay the course, that the homicide rate will be reduced, it will just take time.
