KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s Animal Control Department and the county commission are urging state action on legislation that would hold cruel or neglectful dog owners more responsible when enforcement is required.
Two pieces of proposed legislation would require that the irresponsible owner pay a bond or a boarding fee to hold the dog at the Animal Shelter, or relinquish ownership.
Right now, Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement director Chad Ensign says taxpayers are picking up the costs.
He says fixing the current situation is better for everyone, including the animals, except maybe the abusive owner.
The Humane Society and local counties are urgent state lawmakers to move on the bills, after the holiday recess ends next month.
