KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo city commissioners will set a public hearing on proposed rate hikes for water and sewer bills for two weeks from today at their meeting tonight.
Utilities director Jim Baker says they are proposing a 6% increase in water rates and a 12% hike in sewage bills.
That’s in addition to the 20% rate hike approved last year.
Some commissioners expressed concerns that some residents might have problems paying the higher rates, but Mayor Dave Anderson defended the need for the system improvements.
The public hearing will be held at their December 18th meeting and if approved, take effect on January 1st.
The city commissioners are also expected to set their hearing on the 2024 city budget for their first meeting in January tonight.
