KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Western Michigan University honored a pioneering African American contractor this week who helped in the construction of WMU’s first building, the old East Hall, which has since been remodeled and still stands on East Campus, renamed Heritage Hall.
Albert White also oversaw the masonry construction of buildings at Kalamazoo College, the third version of Kalamazoo Central High School, and part of the structure at Borgess Hospital.
WMU Board of Trustees Chair Shelly Edgerton, who spoke at the event, says White played a major role in the community’s enduring history. White was the son of former slaves who established a contracting business in Kalamazoo two decades after the end of the Civil War.
The remodeled East Hall now serves as the link between the University and the community, is the facility where the Board of Trustees meets, and houses several other functions.
Edgerton says they plan to dedicate a plaque in the spring.
