EAST LANSING, MI — It’s not the $90 million 10-year contract Mel Tucker signed with Michigan State University, but new Spartan head football coach Jonathon Smith is going to be just fine.
Smith has signed a seven year deal that will pay him $7.25 million in his first season and go up from there. The contract is valued at over $52 million and could go up is incentives are reached. And if Smith wins seven games in either of the first three seasons the contract will automatically be extended by one year.
MSU says it had enough competition from other Power Five college football teams also hoping to hire Smith that it added a seventh year to his contract.
The contract is expected to be approved at the December meeting of the MSU Board of Trustees. The Spartans are coming off a 4-8 season full of scandal that led to Tucker being fired three games into the season.
