KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Students in Kalamazoo Public Schools will begin their second trimesters under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Darrin Slade today. He says they will be stepping up their efforts to fight truancy, beginning now.
Each building has assigned a truancy committee to focus on reducing absenteeism.
Beginning today, they will begin counting missed days and any pattern of that shows a chronic problem will be addressed individually.
He says they have 76 students who have already missed 30 days or more this year.
They will be notified this week that they need to have a conference with school officials. If the parents can’t come to school, they will arrange for a home visit.
Dr. Slade says it’s a major change in practices and students could be held back if the problem persists.
Dr. Slade says if any parents have a problem with it, or questions, they plan a public session on Wednesday to discuss the new policy.
It will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium at Lincoln International School.
