PORTAGE MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Safety is continuing to investigate an accident Sunday morning that killed a Scotts teenager and injured a Kalamazoo man.
Officers responded just before 7:00 a.m. to a report of a two vehicle accident in the vicinity of Centre Avenue and Sprinkle Road.
While en route, officers were notified that one of the vehicles was on fire, and that the driver was still inside.
The Fire Division arrived quickly, extinguished the fire, removed the 18-year-old driver from the vehicle, and began efforts to revive him.
The victim was taken to Bronson Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The second victim, a 25-year-old man, was also taken to Bronson Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
It was determined that both vehicles were northbound on Sprinkle, when the vehicle driven by the teenager struck the second vehicle from behind.
Both cars then left the road and struck a utility pole.
It is not known at this time if alcohol/drugs and/or speed were factors.
Sprinkle Road from Centre to Romence was closed for several hours to clean up the accident site and continue the investigation.
