BBATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – Health officials are on alert after multiple nonfatal drug overdoses at a single scene in the City of Battle Creek occurred early Thursday. The Calhoun County Public Health Department is reviewing and coordinating with community partners.
Initial reports indicate the likely involvement of an opioid as the suspected cause; however, most drug overdoses involve multiple substances.
“Harm reduction precautions such as not using drugs when alone, administering naloxone when a suspected overdose is occurring, and calling 911 are important efforts at this time,” said Calhoun County Medical Director Dr. William Nettleton.
While the best way to avoid the risk of overdose is not to use drugs, people who do use or are experiencing substance use disorder can reduce the risk of fatal overdose by having naloxone readily available on you and at home. In addition, never use drugs alone. Make sure a designated person who has not taken drugs is available to administer naloxone or call for emergency assistance.
Substance use treatment can be accessed by calling Southwest Michigan Behavioral Health at 800-781-0353.
