PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage will use a $1 million grant from the federal government to hire more public safety officers. The money comes from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS Office.
Mayor Patricia Randall says public safety is one of their top priorities and they will hire eight new officers with the grant.
Public Safety Director Nicholas Arnold says those positions will allow them to “deliver superior public safety services and work in partnership with the Portage community to safeguard the lives, rights, and property of the people.”
The grant will pay up to 75% of the salary and benefits for the new officers for three years.
What happens when the grant expires?
