PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Portage City Council has approved a new ordinance to require trash haulers post their rates on the city’s website. It comes after people complained about how much they were being charged, with Jean Kimmel saying she was overcharged.
Here is City Manager Pat McGinnis.
Waste haulers appeared at the meeting to oppose the requirement.
Council Member Chris Burns says Kalamazoo Township already has trash rates on their website.
Mayor Patricia Randall says she heard from a 77 year old lady in Paw Paw who also thinks she is being gouged by her trash hauler.
Randall says the woman plans to ask her local officials for a similar ordinance. The new ordinance in Portage won’t take effect until next summer. You don’t have to wait until then to check around.
