KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Authorities have still not released the name of a Calhoun County man who was shot in Kalamazoo’s Edison neighborhood early Sunday morning.
Officers responded at about 2:00 a.m. to Fulford and Palmer, but the victim had already been taken to the emergency room. Doctors there say he died, despite their efforts to save him. The only information released about the victim is that he was 23-years-old and from Battle Creek. No suspect has been identified either.
It’s turning out to be another bad year for gun violence in Kalamazoo, despite new efforts by the city and county to reduce the murder rate. Mayor David Anderson said earlier this month that it’s like a punch in the gut every time it happens. He says their efforts have been directed at preventing murders before they happen.
Anderson says one suggestion they have often gotten is a gun buyback program, but he says that doesn’t work if residents think they need them.
He says people have to act if they find a gun in their child’s bedroom. They need to get help if they know someone who is troubled and has a gun, or look for alternatives to violence if they have disputes.
The city and the county collaborated to sink a million dollars into prevention programs last fall and will soon be embarking on phase two of their joint effort. But those solutions take time to work, and can only do so much.
