BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – One suspect is in the Calhoun County Jail while charges are pending against a second suspect following a Sunday morning breaking and entering incident at the The Tobacco Shoppe in the 100 block of East Columbia Avenue.
Battle Creek police officers were dispatched at about 7:30 a.m.. A witness told them they saw a person trying to force entry into the store through a window, and then saw the person exit the building a short time later, carrying a large garbage bag and leaving westbound on foot.
Officers set up a perimeter in the area. Sgt. Stuart Bell saw a man matching the suspect’s description riding a bike through the Family Fare parking lot on Columbia.
Police detained the suspect and, after viewing The Tobacco Shoppe’s security footage, determine it was the person who had broken in.
Police identified a woman who is being called a second suspect a short time later. They say she had items stolen from the store along with additional stolen items.
According to police, the male suspect admitted to being responsible for numerous other business breaking and entering incidents in Battle Creek, Emmett Township, and elsewhere in Calhoun County.
He is in Calhoun County Jail on charges of breaking and entering. Police are seeking charges against the woman.
