KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s murder rate now reached a new record annual high and the year is not yet over, but it’s not the only form of violence that remains a serious problem in the community. This is the YWCA’s Week without Violence. The YWCA’s Adrienne Zaya says acts of brutality and cruelty come in many forms, and domestic and gender based violence are two of the most common.
Much of it goes unreported.
The YWCA in Kalamazoo operates programs that help the victims of domestic abuse including free counseling and a shelter for women and children escaping abusive situations. She says the Week without Violence comes in the middle of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
