KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan hasn’t updated its local solid waste management plans in over 20 years, only requiring counties to keep track of their active landfills. Now the state also wants counties to register recycling, composting and other facilities as well, partly to boost the amount of trash that Michigan and its residents recycle. Kalamazoo County Planner Rachael Grover says when it comes to filling landfills Michigan is number one in the nation, and that’s not good.
She says the state is giving counties 180 days to decide whether they will revise their plan, and 3 years to actually implement it.
She says the state is even willing to help cover the costs of the planning.
It will also require the county board appoint a new Waste Management Committee. Grover says she will be seeking the county board’s approval to begin the process in the next month or two.
