PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) -They are talking trash again in Portage, not about politics or football, its about stinky smelly garbage, how it gets picked up, who picks it up, and what they charge.
Right now in Portage, it’s a free market system with homeowners contracting with private haulers. A flurry of complaints about service last year prompted the council to ask staff to look into alternatives, including a city regulated, single hauler system.
In their research, City Manager Pat McGinnis says they found rates all over the place.
Council members and McGinnis agree that this isn’t the time to pursue a contract with a single provider, but did not rule it out for the future. The council will revisit the issue at their meeting next Tuesday and may vote to change the ordinance if they can agree on language.
A Portage city memo says they discussed posting trash hauling rates with both Republic and Best Way, the city’s two largest trash firms, “and neither is supportive of disclosing their rates as recommended.”
