KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Area counties, including Kalamazoo, followed the statewide trend with lower unemployment rates in August.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget says Kalamazoo County’s jobless number was 4.2% last month, down from 4.3% in July 2023 and slightly lower than the 4.3% rate in August 2022.
The report says 76 Michigan counties had jobless rate declines between July and August, while 68 counties displayed rate decreases over the past year.
Wayne Rourke from the Michigan Center for Data and Analytics said, “Michigan regional labor markets displayed typical seasonal rate declines in August. Employment and workforce levels rose in most regions over the year.”
Unemployment rates went down in neighboring counties. The jobless rate in St. Joseph County in August was 4.5 %, down from 5.4% in July, which was the most substantial drop in the area. The jobless in August was 3.6% in Allegan County, 4.8% in Calhoun County, 4.7% in Cass County, and 4.7% in Van Buren County.
Michigan’s unemployment rate in August was 3.7%.
Unemployment rates around Michigan in August ranged from 3.0% in Livingston County to 7.0% percent in Oscoda County.
