KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Kalamazoo jury has awarded a St. Joseph County man $14.5 million for wrongful conviction due to a Michigan State Police sergeant violating his constitutional rights in a perjury case.
Ray McCann Jr. was awarded $12.5 million in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages.
The jury says the $2 million was to warn other officers to not do what Sergeant Bryan Fuller did and framed McCann in the sexual assault and death of 11-year-old Jodi Parrack’s 2007 death in Constantine.
His conviction was set aside by the state in August 2018 after Daniel Furlong was arrested and confessed to the girl’s murder.
