KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A series of events to promote the importance of literacy are scheduled in Kalamazoo next week, as the Kalamazoo Literacy Council celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 18-24, 2023.
The group says one of the highlights of the week is the launch of the Everyone Needs To Read public awareness initiative, a media campaign which will communicate the benefits of literacy and help to recruit volunteers and adult learners into service.
The KLC will also host Family Literacy Day in collaboration with the Adult Education and Training Program at Goodwill Industries of Southwestern Michigan Wednesday, September 20 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the Read and Seed community garden at 420 E. Alcott St. The event features a musical story walk with Mr. Bill from the Kalamazoo Public Library.
Friday, September 22, a special Parent Literacy Forum will be held to present multigenerational strategies and innovative tools for building a lifelong love of learning starting at home.
“National Adult Education & Family Literacy Week is a great opportunity to demonstrate the importance of adult learning and the impact these services have on families,” KLC Executive Director Michael Evans said. “Literacy is essential for learners of all ages to gain the skills they need to be successful at work, home, and in their communities.”
