PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The resignation of Portage City Council Member Lisa Brayton will be on the City Council agenda tonight.
Brayton has been caught up in a dispute over whether she was eligible to run for Mayor, or even sit on the Council, because of questions over her residency. She decided to quit last week, she says for the sake of her health.
The City Council will also have to determine how they will select someone to fill out her term.
Brayton’s resignation letter has finally been made public. In it she accuses Mayor Patricia Randall of being behind the allegations, which Brayton says are unfounded. She also accuses the City Council of rushing to judgment “without evidence or proper legal guidance.”
Brayton insists she has been a resident of the city for 30 years.
A memo from City Clerk Erica Eklov says if it is determined that Brayton was ineligible to serve, that means every vote she has taken since November 2021 may have been invalid.
A review of the minutes from 43 council meetings show no decisions were made where she was the deciding vote, but there were two meetings where there were only four members present. Votes at those meetings are now in question because if she was ineligible, there was technically no quorum.
