KALAMAZOO MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect who attempted to flee after a traffic stop in Kalamazoo County is undergoing treatment at Bronson Hospital after crashing in Calhoun County.
Richland police had stopped the suspect’s vehicle just after noon on a possible stolen plate violation.
The suspect stabbed the officer with a pocket knife and fled the scene. The officer suffered minor injuries, and began to pursue the suspect.
Kalamazoo County deputies spotted the suspect in Ross Township, and initiated their pursuit, following the vehicle into the city of Battle Creek.
The Battle Creek police deployed spike strips, which the suspect avoided, near Clark Rd. and Dickman Rd.
A second spike strip deployment at Clark and Ft. Custer Rd proved successful, as the suspect’s vehicle went out of control and crashed.
The suspect had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to Bronson Hospital with serious injuries.
The incident is under investigation by the Michigan State Police.
