KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The new Superintendent for the Kalamazoo Public Schools visited the offices of the Kalamazoo Promise Thursday evening for his latest meet and greet, to mingle with the public and to talk with the officials at what may be one of the district’s most important partners.
Dr. Darrin Slade says the special scholarship program was one of the reasons the job in Kalamazoo interested him. He says it’s a big resource and a major blessing for students.
Slade says he has worked in several urban districts where students weren’t so lucky, because they had the grades to qualify for college but didn’t have the money to attend.
The Promise’s Von Washington says they have added additional staff to provide support services to Kalamazoo Promise scholars who may be struggling due to systemic inequities through their Elevate Program.
Yesterday’s event was just the latest in a series of meet and greet sessions that Dr. Slade is attending this month and next.
