KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officials are calling attention to the seriousness of gun violence in the city by reporting that four people had been shot in two unrelated incidents on Sunday, July 23.
The first incident on Sunday happened around 5:27 a.m. in the 400 block of West Michigan Avenue where two juvenile victims, one 14, and the other, 17, both of Kalamazoo, suffered gunshot wounds. Responding officers found the scene clear of people, but found multiple spent casings. Authorities say the injuries on the two juveniles were non-life-threatening.
The second incident on Sunday occurred around 3:50 p.m. where both a 21 and a 31-year-old were hospitalized due to injuries suffered.
In the second incident, officers responded to a “fight” call but did not find any issues. Officers did speak with several people in the area who advised that there was not a problem. Minutes later, Officers were called back to the area regarding shots fired with victims. This time, responding Officers located two people suffering from gun shots.
The two victims from this shooting, also of Kalamazoo, are currently listed in critical condition.
So far, no arrests have been made in either of the cases which remain under investigation.
Officials with KDPS say in both cases, there were several people present, and say those witnesses can further the investigation by talking with Detectives and help hold the offenders accountable.
