DETROIT, MI — The man accused of kidnapping and strangling a 2-year-old Lansing girl earlier this month has been indicted in the case, according to federal officials.
Rashad Maleek Trice had already been charged by the state with kidnapping of a minor and kidnapping causing death in a criminal complaint. If convicted on the federal charges, the 26-year-old man faces a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison and would be eligible for the death penalty, according to the release.
Trice is accused of stabbing and sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Lansing on July 2 then driving away with her daughter, Wynter Cole Smith.
Police allege Trice strangled Wynter in early July with a phone cord while he was fleeing police. Wynter’s body was found several days later in a Detroit alley.
