KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo’s new Superintendent of Schools has frequently heard one particular concern from parents and staff he has met so far, and that’s discipline. Dr. Darrin Slade has a list of policies on misbehavior and violence, and plans to make it a focus of future meetings with parents.
Slade presented it to the School Board at their last meeting and plans to bring a firmer hand to the district, saying respect and civility is critical at all levels.
Slade said he wants discipline and restorative practices to be consistent from school to school and that it be documented. He also wants staff to be visible at all times to dissuade misbehavior, and that cell phone use will be banned in classroom along with parents being more engaged when discipline occurs, to include home visits.
He went onto say that violence will result in serious consequences every time.
The next, and what may be the biggest of the Meet and Greet sessions with Dr. Slade is set for this Thursday, July 27 at the offices of the Kalamazoo Promise at 180 E. Water Street. The session will begin at 5:30 p.m.
