KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – He pleaded guilty in a federal escape case, but now is working to reverse that plea.
The boyfriend of missing Portage Mother of eight Heather Kelley on Monday requesting to withdraw his July 3rd guilty plea.
In a letter to Judge Robert Jonker, boyfriend Carlos Watts Jr. explained that he was not in his right state of mind on the day he entered the plea. In the letter, Watts went onto say quote, “An upon further reflection an newly gleaned information, I believe it is in my best interest to go to trial, whether it be jury or bench,” end quote.
Watts had written the letter after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge for escaping from Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program, or KPEP on December 12th.
Federal documents indicated that officers found Kelley’s burnt car near East Michigan Avenue and North Sprinkle Road the night before Watts escaped.
Authorities say so far, Watts has not been charged Kelley’s murder, and that Kelley’s body remains missing.
A hearing to potentially replace his lawyer is set for Monday, July 24th.
