KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Kalamazoo has been aggressive about replacing lead water lines in the community’s older homes, but may fall short this year.
Lead lines have caused major problems in Flint and Benton Harbor.
City Utilities Director Jim Baker says last year they replaced 829 at no cost to homeowners. Their goal for 2023 was 600, but he says this year they may not even complete their state mandated minimum of 500 homes, because they may not be able to get the copper fittings they need.
This year and next they will be working on the Northside, Douglas, and Westwood areas. Homeowners will be notified when the crews will be coming to their street.
He says the $14-million project is being almost entirely funded by state grants and forgiven loans.
