UPDATE: After further testing, the no-contact advisory was lifted by the City of Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon.
KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The discharge of 1.5 million gallons of partially untreated wastewater has prompted a no-contact advisory for a stretch the Kalamazoo River.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Services says that around 10:40 p.m. Thursday, workers realized there was a problem with the disinfection feed system at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on Harrison Street north of Paterson Street. The problem was fixed before midnight Thursday, but while work was going on 1.506 million gallons of partially treated wastewater got into the river.
The no-contact advisory is in effect between the Paterson Street bridge in Kalamazoo and the D Avenue bridge in Cooper Township.
City officials say the advisory is expected to last until at least Saturday, but it will be lifted once test show the risk has been minimized.
