ZEELAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM, July 12, 2023) – A dry late spring into early summer hasn’t prevented an annual scourge from returning.
Last week, the Barry-Eaton District Health Department reported mosquitoes in Barry County have tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a disease that can be fatal for humans and horses. Samples were collected June 30 and tested positive at a state lab.
Despite a lack of substantial rain, there has been enough for mosquitoes to breed, according to Master Gardener Jan Meeuwsen of DeBruyn Seed in Zeeland.
According to state officials, Barry and Bay counties are the only ones thus far in Michigan to have mosquito pools test positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. An online link to more information on this disease is here.
