BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Battle Creek police officer is now on leave following an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday, July 12.
According to the Battle Creek Police Department, the incident happened on Boardman Avenue around 3:15 p.m.
Authorities say police were initially called to the area of Dickman Road and Kendall Street where a man seen with a gun was possibly chasing someone. Officers then caught up to the suspect on Boardman Avenue.
Police ordered the suspect to stop, but the young man ran. The officer chased him, giving him several orders to drop the gun. The investigation so far has found that it appears the suspect shot at the officer, and the officer returned fire, striking the suspect once in the shoulder.
The suspect was then taken into custody by police where he is received medical treatment.
The officer involved was not injured, and no one else was hurt.
The department says the officer is on paid administrative leave, which is routine after an officer-involved shooting, with Michigan State Police taking over the investigation.
