By Ken Delaney Jul 4, 2023 | 6:45 AM

PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One person is in custody after a stabbing incident in a Portage McDonald’s parking lot during a fight Monday night.

The Portage Department of Public Safety says around 6:30 p.m., officers were called to the McDonald’s restaurant in the 6900 block of S. Westnedge Avenue near Romence Road Parkway for reports of a shooting and stabbing.

According to the Portage Department of Public Safety, the suspect, a 19-year-old Portage man and the victim, a 24-year-old Kalamazoo man were involved in a domestic argument during a child custody exchange between the suspect and his sister’s ex-boyfriend.

The argument erupted into a physical altercation when the suspect pulled a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times in the back. Multiple other people who came with both parties then began to fight resulting in several other people who received injuries but refused treatment.

The stabbing suspect was lodged in the Kalamazoo County Jail, and the victim was transported to Bronson Hospital by Life Ambulance where he is listed in critical condition.

The investigation is continuing and will be forwarded to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s office for review.

Anyone with further information on this incident is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 269-329-4567 or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100, www.kalamazoosilentobserver.com.
