KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Public Schools Board of Education approved their budget for the coming school year Thursday.
The $213 million plan calls for spending about $13 million more than last year, much of it because the district is facing a deadline to spend federal COVID-19 relief dollars or lose them.
Finance Director Laura Kayser had previously briefed the board about the 2023-2024 budget, so there was little discussion.
The board held a public hearing on the huge document earlier in the evening, but no one objected to the proposal.
They did get one suggestion for future budgets, which was to highlight the portions of the spending that are designed to improve the district for black and brown and special education students.
