KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo City Commission, City Administration and the Department of Public Safety has released a joint statement on the recent string of gun violence in the City. This statement was released the day following the shooting on Hays Park Avenue that took the life of 20-year-old Alexander Schuster on Thursday, June 15.
“The Kalamazoo City Commission, City Administration and Department of Public Safety are deeply concerned about the ongoing crisis of gun violence and its negative effects on this community that we love. The slaying of another young man in the early morning hours on Thursday, June 15, is the latest in a string of deadly shootings that have forever impacted the lives of families, friends, and the broader community.”
“We are strongly committed to using every tool and resource available to address the root causes of gun violence as a community, including a previously announced action plan to reduce juvenile victims of gun violence by 50 percent in 2024. This is work that must be done together. Now is the time for parents, families, community groups, non-profits, faith-based organizations, and the city to unite and redouble our efforts to address this crisis. There is much work yet to be done, and we will continue to engage with our community partners to build the safe community that all residents deserve.”
