KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The first phase of a project to improve utilities and rebuild Ransom Street from Walbridge Street to Westnedge Avenue is scheduled to start Monday, July 24.
Work will be completed from Walbridge Street to Pitcher Street in 2023. Next year, the project will continue west from Pitcher Street to Westnedge Avenue.
Wastewater and water utilities will be upgraded in the entire project area, and stormwater utilities will be replaced as needed. After utility work has been completed, Ransom Street will be entirely rebuilt with an emphasis on placemaking and significant improvements for pedestrians, new lighting, and better parking.
Utility upgrades in this area began in 2017 as part of the River’s Edge Roundabout project at the intersection of Harrison, Gull, and Ransom. Due to the scope of this project, it will require full and partial closures during various parts of construction.
A community meeting on the project will be held on Friday, June 16, at the Northside Association for Community Development (NACD) located at 612 N. Park Street. City staff will share the full plans of the project along with food, music, and games from 6–8 p.m. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the final project plans.
Kalamazoo City Officials say the project aligns with the City’s Imagine Kalamazoo 2025 Master Plan, the 2018 Northside Neighborhood Plan, and the Northside Cultural Business District Authority Plan.
The project is jointly funded by the City’s Major Streets, Water, and Wastewater funds.
The overall cost of the project is up to $12 million.
