PAVILION TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – One teen was killed and another injured in a one vehicle crash in Kalamazoo County’s Pavilion Township Saturday night.
Michigan State Police at the Paw Paw Post say the crash around 9:30 p.m. on E R Avenue near South 29th Street. They say the preliminary investigation shows the driver of a passenger car was traveling east on E R Avenue before running off the roadway, partially overturning, and striking a tree. A witness indicated he saw the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.
Both occupants were trapped inside the vehicle and needed to be extricated. The passenger, a 17-year-old male of Kalamazoo, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, an 18-year-old Portage man, was transported to Bronson Hospital with life threatening injuries.
State Police say seatbelts were worn by both occupants. It is not believed alcohol or drugs were a factor. However, excessive speed does appear to be a factor.
This crash remains open pending further investigation.
