KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Saturday evening concert turned deadly over the weekend in Kalamazoo.
Hundreds gathered at a concert in Spring Valley Park at 2606 Mt. Olivet Road where police say a man was killed and another was injured when shots were fired as the show began to wrap up on Saturday, June 10.
On scene, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officers encountered people fleeing the area, which temporarily hampered their response. They then located a victim who they identified as 35-year-old Marcus Tillman of Kalamazoo with gunshot wounds. Despite attempts to render emergency first aid, Tillman’s wounds were not survivable.
Another victim of the shooting, a 32-year-old male from Kalamazoo was treated at an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities say so far that no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains open and active.
20 spent casings were located by officers who say the fatal shooting took place directly in front of many people attending the event.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division at KDPS are asking that witnesses share any videos taken from before and during the incident and talk with detectives about what they saw.
Witnesses can call the Criminal Investigation Division at 269-337-8139 to speak with a detective. Witnesses can also provide video and statements anonymously through Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
