KALAMAZOO, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It was an encouraging Current Business Trends report issued by Dr. Brian Long this week.
The Director of Supply Management Research with the Seidman College of Business at Grand Valley State University saw improvements in New Orders, Production and Employment in his monthly canvassing of purchasing managers in the Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo markets done during the last two weeks of May.
Last Friday, economists were surprised by the latest national jobs report, which showed the US economy added 339,000 jobs in May, more than the predicted range from 190-thousand to 195-thousand. Long wasn’t among those who were surprised.
Finished Goods Inventory was down sharply though, which Long attributed to a strong liquidation of finished product sitting in warehouses, while short and long-term confidence among his survey’s responders “upticked this month,” with comments from participants considered “fairly mixed.”
