KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo City Commission tonight will take its first look at a proposal to make it a violation to use your cell phone or other electronic devices while driving.
Distracted driving laws are already in effect in many other cities and states. The local ordinance would make exceptions for CB radios and some other devices, and if you were calling 911 to report an emergency.
Implementation here would depend on whether Governor Gretchen Whitmer signs bills already approved by the Legislature that would permit local enforcement. If she does, the ordinance could take effect in July.
The City Commission will also accept for first reading an ordinance to create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Department at City Hall.
The City already has a D.E.I. Director. A commission subcommittee was established to look into the idea, and will report out and explain their recommendation this evening.
